Using Your Eyes and Ears

Presbyopia (age-related vision loss) and Presbycusis (age-related hearing loss) each result in sensory loss, but it is a mistake to think that a hearing instrument used to treat age-related hearing loss will necessarily be as effective as reading glasses in remedying age-related vision loss. Many people have the unreasonable expectation that a hearing instrument can magnify sound as well as optical lenses can magnify light images. However, the fact is that reading glasses focus on a singular task with a simple adjustment, and a hearing instrument is called upon to perform the complicated task of taking sound in a particular frequency range, amplifying it, and changing the signal back into sound waves. Although this process closely approximates natural hearing, it cannot duplicate it. Reasonable expectations about the ability of a hearing instrument to improve hearing are directly linked with higher satisfaction levels.

Learning to hear with the assistance of hearing instruments requires practice in the beginning. We’ll help you through the process at SACKVILLE HEARING CENTRE, beginning with comprehensive testing and evaluation by an audiologist to determine the most appropriate way to address your hearing impairment. We’ll show you several different types of hearing aids to be sure we find the right one for you. Follow-up care is also a very important part of our services. To arrange a hearing test and/or to discuss the benefits of hearing aids, please call 865-4455 to book an appointment.
