Solving an Ancient Riddle
If you have ever wondered how ancient Greek actors and musicians were able to perform plays before thousands of people without help from microphones, amplifiers, or assistive listening devices, scientists have recently uncovered the secret. Their research took them to the Greek theatre of Epidaurus, where, dating back to the forth-century B.C, audiences of up to 14,000 were able to hear performances clearly. The secret behind these outstanding acoustics rested in the limestone material used to construct the seats. Testing showed that the limestone seats provide a filtering effect that suppresses the low frequency of voices, which served to lessen background crown noise. In addition the limestone seats echo high frequencies back at the audience, which served to enhance the effect. To this day, acoustic engineers look for technologies that will suppress low-frequency background noise and increase the amplification of high-frequency conversational sound.
