A Matter of Balance
There is evidence to suggest that the more pronounced the difference in hearing loss between each ear, the greater the problem people have with balance and dizziness. This observation has led some experts to conclude that a proper binaural (a hearing instrument in each ear) fitting not only provides the best hearing under most conditions of noise, but it may also help the wearer attain better physical balance and stability.
It should also be noted that improper correction of eye dissimilarities with glasses or contacts could lead to dizziness and physical imbalance. This has led some to conclude that the areas of the brain associated with hearing and eyesight may receive some balance stimulation through the eyes and ears.
Videnonystagmography (VNG) is a test of a person’s balance system, using a camera and a sophisticated computer to evaluate tiny eye movements associated with neural connections that stretch from the balance mechanism in the inner ear to the eye muscles.
We take the responsibility very seriously of matching every patient with the hearing instruments best suited to his or her special circumstances. We then use the necessary technology to achieve the most accurate, comfortable, custom fit.
The extensive training required of audiologists and our experiences in the field make us well suited to both tasks.
